What is military time?

Military time is a 24-hour time format used in the United States. Unlike the regular 24-hour format used in other parts of the world, it has no hours and minutes separator. Instead, it uses four digits in which the first two represent the hours and the remaining ones the minutes.

For example, 6:30 A.M. would be 0630 in military time, with the 06 representing the hours and the 30 the minutes.

Military time always starts at 0000 (12 A.M.) and ends at 2359 (11:59 P.M.). It also follows specific spelling rules. The hours are always read as ‘hundred’. For instance, 2000 (8 P.M.) reads as “twenty hundred”, and 0500 (5 A.M.) as “zero/oh five hundred”. When there are minutes, the numbers are spelled out individually, including the zeros. For example, 0545 (5:45 A.M) is “zero/oh-five-four-five”. However, in more casual contexts the minutes can also be read as a full number: “zero/oh five forty-five”.

Military time is mostly employed in professions and contexts that require time precision. For example, it is used by the military (thus the name), medical personnel, firefighters, law enforcement officers, and in any type of emergency services. It is also used by meteorologists, astronomists, and even in the promotion of events or TV shows when the promoters want to be specific about the time.
